Right-hander Trey Yesavage is expected to start on Monday against the Orioles, relays Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet. Yesavage has been on the IL since early August with right knee inflammation. He began a rehab assignment earlier this week.
Zwelling adds that Yesavage should be able to cover a few innings in his return. Swingman Spencer Miles would be an option to tag-team the outing with him. Yesavage threw 34 pitches in his lone rehab appearance with Triple-A Buffalo.
Injuries have limited Yesavage to 18 starts this season. A shoulder issue delayed him to start the year. The knee injury has cost him six weeks. The young righty has been generally effective when available. Yesavage has a 3.65 ERA across 93 2/3 innings. He has a decent 23.6% strikeout rate, though he’s walking opponents at an 11.9% clip. Control has been a persistent challenge for Yesavage. His first taste of the majors was a big success, particularly in the postseason, but he had an 11.3% walk rate in the big leagues and a 10.5% mark in the minors last year.
Toronto is on the edge of the playoff picture after dropping three of four games this week. The club has two more matchups with Texas, who are directly ahead of the Blue Jays in the AL Wild Card race. The Rangers are a game and a half behind the White Sox for the final postseason bid. Toronto is two and a half games back heading into Saturday night’s action.
The Blue Jays are piecing together the rotation down the stretch. They’ve leaned on bullpen games on days Dylan Cease, Jose Soriano, and Max Scherzer aren’t starting. Sunday’s approach will feature Spencer Arrighetti in a bulk role, notes Zwelling. Toronto could opt for a left-handed opener to counter lefties Corey Seager and Brandon Nimmo near the top of the Rangers’ lineup.
