Pirates second baseman Brandon Lowe has thrived this year, but it could go down as his only season with the franchise. While Lowe is on track to become a free agent in the offseason, he and the Pirates have mutual interest in a new deal, Colin Beazley of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Lowe told Beazley the Pirates have not approached him about an extension, though he added: “I think this team’s got a very bright future and a lot of good players, and there’s a lot of good baseball that’s going to be played in this park for a long time. [If] they want to talk, I’m all ears.”
In the event a multiyear agreement does not materialize before free agency begins in November, the Pirates will likely give Lowe a $23.1MM qualifying offer. As MLBTR’s Anthony Franco explained earlier this month, the only thing stopping that from being a slam dunk is low-payroll Pittsburgh’s hesitance to spend.
If the Pirates do present Lowe with a QO and he signs for upward of $50MM elsewhere, they will receive a pick after the first round of the 2027 draft in return. That would be a nice consolation prize for the Pirates, who acquired the former Ray in a three-team trade involving the Astros last December. In a swap that also delivered left-handed reliever Mason Montgomery and outfielder Jake Mangum to Pittsburgh, the team shipped righty Mike Burrows to Houston. Lowe and Montgomery have been excellent, and Mangum has been a useful contributor. Meanwhile, Burrows has fallen well short of expectations with the Astros.
Lowe, Montgomery and Mangum have combined for 7.9 fWAR to Burrows’ minus-0.4, but the Pirates will nonetheless miss the playoffs for the 11th straight year. However, at 77-77, they have a chance to finish at least .500 for the first time since 2018. If the team expects to take another step forward in 2027, keeping Lowe would likely improve its chances. With a career 123 wRC+, Lowe has produced solidly above-average offensive numbers since he debuted in 2018. This season has been more of the same for the lefty-swinging Lowe, who has slashed .260/.331/.488 (119 wRC+) with 32 home runs in 626 plate appearances.
Lowe’s ongoing success with the bat hasn’t shocked anyone, though his dramatic one-year turnaround in the field has been a pleasant surprise. He endured an especially poor 2025 at second base, where he posted minus-10 Fielding Run Value and a matching minus-14 Defensive Runs Saved and Outs Above Average. But Lowe has been among the game’s top defenders this year, having accounted for 12 FRV, 13 DRS and 14 OAA. The overall package has been worth a personal-best 5.4 bWAR and a career-high 4.6 fWAR.
Although age isn’t on the 32-year-old Lowe’s side, the two-time All-Star should benefit from a weak upcoming free agent class. He’ll be one of the most established and consistent hitters available if he gets to the open market. MLBTR ranked Lowe as the game’s 10th-best impending free agent earlier this week, with Steve Adams contending he could be in line for a three-year pact in the $20MM-per-season range. While it’s unknown if the frugal Pirates are willing to commit to Lowe on a pricey multiyear deal, he told Beazley he is “absolutely” interested in staying with the club.
