More about the Fringe Festival

The Fringe Festival kicked off on Tuesday, bringing music, dance, theater, comedy, film, visual arts, acrobatics, magic, and other kinds of acts to venues across the city. In total, the festival features 715 performances, including many free shows, across 45 venues. The venues include outdoor spaces, universities, schools, museums, theaters, restaurants, cultural institutions, and more.

The festival runs for 12 straight days, through Saturday, Sept. 26, and is considered New York State’s largest multidisciplinary performing arts festival. Once again, organizers have set up the Spiegelgarden at the corner of Gibbs and East Main streets as a hub for people to learn about the festival, get food and drinks, play outdoor games, and watch free outdoor movies. You can see the full festival lineup and get tickets here.

Pete Davidson, the comedian and actor known for his role in “Saturday Night Live,” is this year’s comedy headliner. He’s set to perform at Kodak Hall within the Eastman Theatre on Friday, Sept. 25, as part of his stand-up comedy tour.

In addition to Circus in the City, the Fringe Street Beat is another highly anticipated free act. The annual elite-level breakdancing competition takes place at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Park on closing day. Three-on-three teams will face off for a chance to win the title of Fringe Street Beat Champions and a $1,200 prize on Saturday, Sept. 26. The preliminary round gets underway at 12:30 p.m., and the finals get underway at 3:30 p.m.

There will also be free nightly film screenings at the Spiegelgarden and plenty of other free acts across the city. You can see a list of daily free shows here.

Videos and photos from the festival so far

There have been so many usual acts at the Fringe Festival so far. While many watched the Bills home opener Thursday night, some others went out to the Fringe Festival to see a young man, dressed as a gorilla, dressed as an old man, sitting and rocking in a rocking chair for nearly an hour, who then just left.

On Wednesday night, News10NBC’s own Rich Caniglia took part in a Fringe Festival act that included science, weather, and humor at the School of the Arts. RMSC organized “Cloudy with a Chance of Science”, where three comedians interviewed and learned from Rich’s expertise.
