Bill Belichick’s son Steve Belichick is leaving North Carolina.
The 39-year-old resigned as the Tar Heels’ defensive coordinator on Thursday, Sept. 17, as the school wrapped up an investigation into its football program. His resignation takes effect in late October, when his medical leave ends. That leave began in early August.

What UNC Said
The school’s statement said the investigation “determined that certain actions demonstrated a disregard for Carolina’s values and standards of conduct.” It also called those actions “isolated in scope and not a systemic failure.”
UNC did not say what the actions were, and it declined to comment on any individuals, citing its policy on personnel matters. The school said “all necessary corrective actions are now underway” and that it considers the investigation “resolved.”
How It Got Here
Bill Belichick, a six-time Super Bowl winner with the New England Patriots, made the jump to college football with Michael Lombardi as one of his first hires. UNC opened its investigation in late July, days after it put Lombardi, the team’s general manager, on paid administrative leave. Lombardi resigned on Sept. 3.
That same day, Raleigh’s WRAL cited anonymous sources in reporting on the kinds of questions investigators asked, with some of them focused on Steve Belichick.
At his first news conference after Lombardi’s exit, the elder Belichick said he believes his program “totally” has an atmosphere of following the rules. “Obviously everybody’s responsible, including me, for doing things properly. And we intend to do that,” he said.
On the day of that news conference, UNC vice chancellor for communications Dean Stoyer said the school “continues to support Bill Belichick and the Carolina football program.”
Who Takes Over
Bill’s other son, Brian Belichick, the team’s safeties coach, will take over as defensive coordinator, a team source told The Athletic.
He steps in with the Tar Heels still undefeated after wins over TCU and East Tennessee State. Clemson is up next.
