A February DFA Trade Has Had A Big Impact On The 2026 Season ...Middle East

News by : (MLBtraderumors) -

If you’re a regular reader of MLB Trade Rumors, you know that players are designated for assignment almost every day. Those players can sometimes end up on another team, via a trade or waivers or free agency. A lot of the time, those transactions don’t prove to be significant.

The following players were designated for assignment in February of 2026: Drew Romo, Jairo Iriarte, Weston Wilson, Ken Waldichuk, Cody Laweryson, Víctor Mesa Jr, Andy Ibáñez, Ben Rortvedt (twice), Dom Hamel, Bryan Hudson, George Soriano, Braden Shewmake, Brett Wisely, Anthony Banda, Kaleb Ort, Max Schuemann, Yanquiel Fernández, Mitch Spence, Grant Holman, Jackson Kowar, Josh Simpson, Zak Kent (twice), Ben Cowles, Bryan Ramos, Jack Suwinski and Tirso Ornelas.

Most of those players haven’t been huge factors this season. Only three of those pitchers have logged at least 17 innings in the big leagues this year. Two of those, Banda and Soriano, had mid-4.00s ERAs. Hudson is the only one to really have a strong season and he ended up back with his original team. After his DFA, the White Sox traded him to the Mets but then got him back via waivers in March.

Among the position players, the impacts have also mostly been minor. Some of those guys didn’t even crack the majors this year. Schuemann, Romo, Shewmake, Rortvedt, Wilson and Ibáñez combined for 604 plate appearances, a .189/.267/.318 batting line, 67 wRC+ and -0.8 wins above replacement, according to FanGraphs.

The major exception has been Mesa. The Marlins designated him for assignment in early February when they claimed right-hander Garrett Acton off waivers from the Rockies. A few days later, Mesa was traded to the Rays for minor league infielder Angel Brachi. That deal has worked out far better for one of the two Florida clubs than the other.
