As for Pages, he’s been out nearly a month with a fractured hand that was expected to sideline him for four to five weeks. He’s nearing the four-week mark right now. There’s no option for him to head out on a rehab stint with the minor league season having drawn to a close, so he’ll jump right back onto the roster without a minor league tune-up. Presumably, the Dodgers will try to get him some reps against live pitching in a simulated game setting.
Pages’ return is pivotal for the Dodgers. The 25-year-old former top prospect — originally signed as an international free agent for a $300K bonus — has emerged as one of the top center fielders in baseball this season. He’s been credited with a colossal 19 Defensive Runs Saved and 8 Outs Above Average with the glove, and he’s delivered that standout defense while batting .272/.338/.458 with 21 homers, 25 doubles, two triples and a dozen steals (albeit in 19 tries).
A well-timed hot streak from Teoscar Hernández, who’d previously been struggling at nearly career-worst levels, has helped mitigate the loss of Pages in recent weeks. Former top infield prospect Alex Freeland has been on a tear since being one of Los Angeles’ initial September call-ups, too, which has allowed him to handle second base while Tommy Edman sees regular center field work in place of Pages.
Recent production from Hernández and Freeland gives Roberts plenty of options to consider, particularly with top prospect Josue De Paula also making his debut this past week. De Paula is just 2-for-14 to begin his MLB tenure, but one of those hits was a homer and he’s also tallied six walks against just two strikeouts in his first 20 major league plate appearances. Shohei Ohtani will return at some point before season’s end and reclaim the primary DH spot, but De Paula could push for a playoff roster spot if he shows well over the final nine games.
