Avondale and Logan Square in Chicago have been hailed by TimeOut magazine as among the “coolest” in the world — but this year, a different one made the list.
TimeOut released their “40 coolest neighborhoods in the world” list for 2026 Wednesday. According to the magazine, neighborhoods across the globe were nominated by “on-the-ground experts,” and final rankings were made based on a range of criteria, including food and drink, nightlife, unique local businesses, liveability and community.
“This lucky lot spends their time exploring every corner of their hometowns to discover the best places to eat, drink, shop and hang out right now, so you can trust we know what we’re talking about,” editors wrote.
In 2024, Logan Square made the magazine’s list, ranking at No. 34. One year later, Avondale came in at No. 10 as one of only five US neighborhoods to make the global list.
This year, just three US cities made the cut: Chinatown, in Los Angeles at No. 4; Financial District, in New York at No. 28; and West Town, in Chicago, at No 18.
“If you’ve heard about a cool new spot in Chicago recently, there’s a good chance that it’s in West Town,” editors wrote. “This West Side enclave, shaped by German, Polish, Ukrainian and Russian immigrants, is home to some of Chicago’s most exciting culinary, art and cultural scenes.”
The entry goes on to say that the boundaries of West Town weren’t entirely clear, but generally spans from the Chicago River to Kedzie and then between Division and Hubbard streets. West Town also encomasses several distinct neighborhoods, including Ukranian Village, East Village and Noble Square.
West Town is also home to two restaurants that have two Michelin stars each: Feld and Kasama.
The neighborhood that earned the No. 1 spot on TimeOut’s list was Jongno 3-ga in Seoul, South Korea.
