The cross-country season is underway as Alabama looks to build on the success of recent years. The men’s and women’s teams both finished third at last week’s City Auto Memphis Twilight Classic.
On the women’s side, the top three finishers were all freshmen: Eliana Black in ninth place, Celina Coryell in 14th place, Khushi Deol in 17th place, Isabelle Sullivan in 24th place and Meriel Rowland rounding out the team in 38th place.
The men saw two underclassmen battle for spots just inside the top 10, with Jackson Hogsed and Ethan Locke finishing 8th and 9th, respectively. This was Locke’s first race for the Crimson Tide as the freshman from Texas seeks to grow into his collegiate role. The more experienced Alabama men — Evan Simpson, Jackson Harris and Evan Trapp — finished 17th, 22nd and 49th, respectively.
This race offered some unique aspects compared to other collegiate cross-country races. For starters, the team ran at night compared to the usual early morning time. Additionally, the women ran a 5K, and the men competed at the four-mile distance. Compared to the normal distances of 6K, or 3.7 miles, for the women and 8-10k, or 4.9-6.2 miles, for the men, this was a tune-up for the Crimson Tide.
“We’ve got a foundation to build on. Preparing for a night race brought real challenges, yet both teams rose to meet them. I’m proud of the way we’ve started the season,” coach Dan Waters said after the meet.
Both Crimson Tide teams return to action on Saturday at the Southern Showcase in Huntsville at John Hunt Park. The first gun will fire at 8:25 a.m. CT, and there should be favorable conditions with a forecast of clear skies and a low temperature around 70 degrees.
