At its Sep. 15 council meeting, the Town of Carrboro passed a resolution honoring Bryce Aric Jungbluth, a former Carrboro firefighter who died on July 31, 2026. He was 27 years old.
“Now, therefore be it resolved by the Carrboro Town Council that the Town of Carrboro honors the life and service of Bryce Aric Jungbluth and expresses its profound gratitude for his dedication to Carrboro and to the fire service,” Mayor Barbara Foushee said while delivering the resolution. “Be it further resolved that the town extends its deepest sympathy and steadfast support to Bryce’s wife, Emma, his son Hayes, and all members of his family, and joins them in remembering a life defined by service, courage, and love.”
Jungbluth, who had recently moved back to his home state of Wisconsin, was working as a firefighter at Eau Claire Fire Rescue at the time of his death. According to the U.S. Fire Administration website, he had complained he was experiencing headaches during multiple 24-hour shifts before ultimately being hospitalized on July 26. It was determined he was suffering from a sudden onset of hydrocephalus, a condition in which cerebrospinal fluid accumulates in the brain’s ventricles. He died five days later.
Foushee said the town would presented a copy of the resolution to Jungbluth’s family. Carrboro Fire Chief Will Potter, who attended the meeting with 11 other members of the department, spoke highly of the late firefighter’s character.
“He was truly one of one, and his fingerprints are all over our department and all over our town,” Potter said. “And so we appreciate the time today. This resolution really goes far to make sure that Bryce’s service to Carrboro is not forgotten.”

Jungbluth first joined the Carrboro Fire-Rescue Department in 2022. The department promoted him to fire driver – a term for the driver of a firetruck – in 2024, and recognized him as Firefighter of the Year. That same year, he traveled to western North Carolina to help communities recover from Helene’s flooding. The town’s release on the resolution detailed his local heroism during July 2025’s flooding from Tropical Depression Chantal.
“Bryce was among the Fire-Rescue personnel who entered rapidly rising, fast-moving floodwaters to rescue two people trapped atop a partially submerged vehicle,” the release read. “For the extraordinary courage, determination and commitment to human life demonstrated during the rescue, he was awarded the Medal of Valor, the department’s highest honor for heroism beyond the call of duty.”
The release highlighted his work for the department outside the regular responsibilities of a firefighter.
“Bryce also strengthened Carrboro Fire-Rescue through his work in community risk reduction and public communication, helping the department connect with residents, share important safety information and tell the story of its service,” the release continued. “His colleagues remember him as a capable firefighter, a trusted friend and someone who brought energy, humor and genuine care to the firehouse.”
Jungbluth’s funeral service was held on Aug. 10 at the Hayward High School Gymnasium in Hayward, Wisconsin.
