According to American Songwriter, the song’s genesis came from Tom Fogerty‘s departure from Creedence Clearwater Revival. As frontman John Fogerty processed the divide with members Stu Cook and Doug Clifford, he channeled the heartbreak of their imminent breakup directly into the track’s lyrics.
“That song is really about the impending breakup of Creedence. The imagery is, you can have a bright, beautiful, sunny day, and it can be raining at the same time,” John told Rolling Stone, as reported by American Songwriter. “The band was breaking up. I was reacting, ‘Geez, this is all getting serious right at the time when we should be having a sunny day.’”
“Those are the four people that made those records,” he told Rolling Stone in 2025. “And that didn’t particularly happen again in history.”
Fogerty continued, “So obviously those four human beings are unique human beings. I still give a lot of credit to the way something like ‘Proud Mary’ feels or ‘Born on the Bayou.’ And there is mystery in that. There’s a mysterious aura or ingredient that I’m not gonna sit here and say was in my pocket.”
The song continues to inspire millions of listeners every day, transforming a bittersweet 1971 farewell into one of the most enduring anthems in modern streaming history. It’s a rare feat for a track born out of band turmoil to outlive the drama and lock down a permanent spot on the charts.
