“Right Back Where We Started From” wasn’t written about what was happening at that very moment. Instead, the track is about a woman in a relationship that’s falling apart and her wanting to bring back what originally brought them together in the first place.
Some reports claim that Nightingale originally refused to record the track because of its “crush” rhythm. Other reports detail that the singer almost rejected the track because she didn’t want to revive her career, as she had spent time raising her daughter. She was soon convinced the track would be a hit, but wanted it to be released under a pseudonym. Tibbs and Edwards convinced her not to and to accept a royalty deal instead of a session singer fee.
“Right Back Where We Started From” became an international hit that landed at No. 1 on Cash Box and No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It also landed at No. 5 on the Adult Contemporary chart, and it hit in France, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Canada, and landed at No. 8 in the UK.
Nightingale recalled in a 2013 interview that Tubbs “took it straight to United Artists Records [in London], and they loved it too. They paid me 100 pounds (and after that) they (offered) me an advance and a contract to finish recording the single.”
The track became something of a sports anthem after it was used in the 1977 hockey comedy Slap Shot. NHL teams like the New York Islanders and Toronto Maple Leafs adopted the song as their victory tune, played following every win at home.
