Travelers along Interstate 85 South will have to take a longer detour to access Interstate 40 East in Orange County for the next two months.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation shared an alert Monday saying its construction crews are preparing to close the exit ramp for Exit 163 along I-85 South — a ramp west of Hillsborough that loops vehicles over the interstate and redirects them onto I-40 East. The closure will begin at 9 p.m. on Monday and is set to last through late November, weather permitting, according to the NCDOT.
The official detour suggested by the Department of Transportation requires driving a couple more miles on I-85 South before taking Exit 161 to Efland. Motorists can then turn left onto the I-85/U.S. 70 connector and drive under the interstate bridge before turning left onto I-40 East.

The construction work on the ramp and bridge is part of the ongoing I-40 widening project, which is adding lanes across the 11.4-mile stretch of the interstate through Orange County and has been underway since 2022. The closure comes after the ramp was closed periodically between September 8 and 12, when crews started hauling and clearing operations in preparation of the construction work.
With the change, drivers using I-85 in Orange County are encouraged by NCDOT to stay alert, be aware of the updated traffic flow and obey all posted traffic signs. Real-time traffic data can be found on the department’s Drive NC website.
