ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Artificial intelligence is making it easier for scammers to create fake rental listings and steal your money.
AI is also making it easier for renters to spot the fakes. Scammers are using AI to fool people into believing they’re putting down a deposit on a great apartment, only to learn they’ve lost their money and have no home.
Jeremias Maneiro, known as J-Man, is a realtor with The Maneiro Team at Remax Realty Group and a self-proclaimed AI expert who can spot a fake listing immediately because he understands the tools of the scammer.
How scammers use it
Maneiro gave directions to AI to create a fake listing in Fredonia, home of a SUNY campus.
“Then create a fake address for a multi-family that is in that area. I then want you to give me an image prompt for the exterior of this home so that it looks just like a multi-family home in that area. Its condition should look like a college rental,” Maneiro said.
In just seconds, AI created a fictional home. The wood frame home appeared to be built in the early 1900s, just like other homes in the area that have been converted to student rentals, but it’s all fake, complete with a fake address.
“It’s using the fictional address of 47 Whitney Place in Fredonia,” Maneiro said.
Deanna Dewberry, News10NBC: “AI created an entire fake listing without scraping an existing one.”
Maneiro: “Correct. That’s the difference between now and before 2022.”
Maneiro uses his expertise in AI to help his clients.
“Our clients are doing research too, so helping them interpret the answers that they receive,” Maneiro said.
Spotting the red flags
Here are the big red flags: The rent is too low, and the deposit is less than customary: One month of rent, and they don’t ask for a credit check.
If you see a listing that’s too good to be true, ask AI what’s the average rent for a one bedroom in this area. Copy the listing and paste it into AI and ask it for information about the picture.
You should always tour the property in person if possible. But if you can’t, AI can be your research buddy.
