ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A Dundee man is facing various charges after Rochester Police say he killed a man back in July on North Union Street.

The initial call
On July 3, police went to an apartment on North Union Street for a report of someone possibly dead inside. When police responded, that’s when they say they found the body of Marc Stekloff, 77.
According to police, a friend went to check on Stekloff and initially found him. Police say the friend checked on him as he wasn’t answering the phone.
How it happened
On July 1, police say Stekloff was last seen alive when he was bringing garbage cans in from the curb to his house. They say during this, Stekloff had a brief meeting with a person walking in the area.
Police say after the encounter, the suspect, 34-year-old Jonathan Shearin, went into Stekloff’s home, “brutally” assaulted and stabbed him, stole his car keys, then fled in Stekloff’s car.
The Medical Examiner’s Office ruled that Stekloff had been stabbed over three dozen times.
On July 4, police say Stekloff’s car was found abandoned in a parking lot on Hudson Avenue, which later helped police identify Shearin as the suspect.

According to police, Shearin was arrested in Wayne County on July 2 for three separate home invasions where they say six elderly victims were assaulted.

Detectives believe Shearin fled to Wayne County immediately after killing Stekloff. He’s been in the Wayne County Jail since his July 2 arrest.
Police say Shearin is a predicate felon who was out on parole for previous burglary convictions at the time of the home invasions and the murder.
Shearin’s charges
On Monday, an indictment was unsealed in Monroe County Court, charging Shearin with murder in the second degree. He was remanded to the Monroe County Jail.
