Inside the old McCormick Mansion in Chicago’s Gold Coast is now the largest and most lavish magic venue in the world.
“We wanted this place to be the first place you experience, because it brings you back to an era of mansions in 1895,” said Bre Smith, the Executive Vice-President of The Hand and The Eye.
From the moment you step inside, you’re transported to an era only found in a museum. The dress code is formal. Your phone must stay in your pocket and no photos are allowed.
The Hand and The Eye highlights a world that favors secrecy and wonder. Leadership wants guests to be present.
“Magic can happen anywhere in the mansion,” Smith explained. “No two experiences are ever the same.”
The first stop is typically the main lounge, where bar magic is performed.
“Bar magic was very prominent in Chicago in the 1910s,” Smith said. “It’s long history in this city make it fun to see the hand magic and performance magic.”
The mansion is more than 30,000 square feet of Gilded Age allure. Each room has its own character, décor, twists and tricks. Smith wants to make clear, a ticket inside The Hand and The Eye is not “eater-tainment.” It is not dinner and show.
“Everything tells a story, it was all intentional,” she said.
Glen Tullman is the founder of The Hand and The Eye. He poured some $50 million into the building to bring it back to life. Tullman is a Chicago native and lover of magic himself, making this project a passion to pass on to the city.
“Glen wanted this to be here for generations,” Smith said. “Just as it was for the McCormick’s’, the puppet opera, Lawry’s and now The Hand and The Eye.”
