And for some reason, he decided it was time to go back… All this is starting to connect. I said to myself, ‘Well, I’ve never written a religious song. I’ve written some oddball songs, but some serious song, I can do that.’ I just sat down, and it all came together.”
Greenbaum’s track utilizes Christian imagery to sing about the afterlife. Lines like “Gotta have a friend in Jesus / So you know that when you die / He’s gonna recommend you to the spirit in the sky” shared the singer’s newfound outlook on death. When paired with the song’s blended use of stylistic gospel elements and distorted psychedelic rock, it instantly resonated among rock fanatics.
