Health officials in the Chicago area are warning about a growing measles outbreak in southwestern Wisconsin, a popular destination for northern Illinois travelers, where more than 160 cases have been reported.
The warning came after Chicago officials warned of a possible exposure at Union Station, and Kane County recorded its second measles case of the year. The most recent case, involving a vaccinated person, was linked to an initial case reported in August.
“The first measles case in Kane County this year demonstrated how quickly measles can create a significant public health response,” health officials said. “That individual had up to 1,600 potential exposures, requiring the Kane County Health Department to identify and notify people who may have been exposed and provide guidance to help prevent further spread.”
“Vaccination greatly reduces the risk of getting measles, but breakthrough infections can occur,” Kane County health officials said. “Even when a vaccinated person develops measles, vaccination generally provides protection against severe illness and complications.”
Anyone with symptoms of measles — which include high fever, cough, runny nose, watery eyes and a rash — is advised to not go to an emergency room or doctor’s office without calling ahead.
“Measles is highly contagious, and arriving without advance notice could expose other patients and healthcare workers,” officials said in the alert.
Kane County also warned that cases were spreading just over the border in Wisconsin, with more than 163 measles cases recorded so far as of Sept. 10. Of those, 162 cases were in people who hadn’t been vaccinated.
Additional probable measles cases were also reported in southwestern Wisconsin, including Grant, Iowa and Lafayette counties, the Kane County Health Department said. Public health officials in Wisconsin said measles is continuing to spread locally in the area.
“Southwestern Wisconsin is a popular destination for visitors from northern Illinois, including during the Labor Day holiday weekend,” Kane County said. “People who traveled to the area recently may have spent time in communities where measles is currently spreading. KCHD encourages residents who traveled to southwestern Wisconsin to be aware of the ongoing outbreak and to monitor for symptoms of measles, particularly if they are not vaccinated or are unsure of their vaccination status.”
