GREECE, N.Y. — Two youth teams in Greece held a moment of silence after one of their teammates, 11-year-old Parker Mitchell, died in a go-kart crash in Darien.
Parker was a member of the Greece Chargers Youth Football Team and Greece Little League Baseball. The teams took the field on Sunday in his memory. A statement on Facebook from Greece Chargers reads:
“Our Greece Chargers family is heartbroken over the tragic loss of Parker, one of our A Team football players and big brother to one of our Chargers cheerleaders, Teagan. There are simply no words for a loss like this. Our hearts are with Parker’s parents, his sister, and everyone who loved him as they face something no family should ever have to endure. When one of our Chargers families hurts, we all hurt with them. We are keeping Parker’s entire family in our thoughts and prayers and surrounding them with all the love and support our Chargers community can give.”
A statement from Greece Little League reads:
“There is a hole in the GLL Family that will never be filled. Over the weekend, we lost Coach Mitchell’s son Parker in an accident. Parker was an amazing baseball player who played house since Tball, just started 12U Travel, has achieved many hours of field time, wins and close friends. Parker is a true LL player who put in hours of practice, was always encouraging his teammates, teaching his little sister and always ready to help at the complex. He was so excited for Travel and his future as an umpire. Please keep The Mitchell Family, Parkers Coaches, Teamates and Friends in your prayers and thoughts. Please keep Parker in your hearts.”
Genesee County sheriff’s deputies say Parker died after the go-kart that he was driving rolled over into a pond in Darien on the afternoon of Sunday, Sept. 6. A Mercy Flight took him to the hospital, where he died from his injuries. His sister was treated at the scene by medical crews.
The community is coming together to help Parker’s family. Dell’s Market and Deli on English Road in Greece is holding a fundraiser through Saturday, with all proceeds going to the Mitchell family.
