Eight victims were shot, three of whom sustained severe injuries, in a shooting that occurred in the late hours of Saturday night. The shooting occurred on 22nd Street, according to Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit Capt. Marty Sellers.
The shooting occurred where an outdoor neighborhood block party had been held, located on the 2600 block of 22nd Street.
The City of Tuscaloosa permitted the event until 10 p.m. A large crowd was present when officers arrived at approximately 10:48 p.m., and they immediately provided medical aid until Tuscaloosa Fire and Rescue and NorthStar EMS arrived at the scene.
Seven victims were initially reported, but the total was bumped to eight after an additional victim arrived at the hospital Sunday afternoon for treatment of a gunshot graze wound. Of the victims who were injured, some were juveniles. Several empty vehicles were also hit by bullets.
As of Sunday morning, all of the victims were reported to be in stable condition, including the three who suffered severe injuries.
The Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office and The University of Alabama Police Department helped Tuscaloosa police secure and control the large crowd at the scene and at DCH Regional Medical Center.
The Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit, with assistance from FBI Birmingham, put a statement out on Sunday evening asking anyone who attended the event or was in the surrounding area Saturday night to provide any photographs, cellphone video, surveillance footage or other helpful information.
The investigation remains ongoing, and no arrests have been made at this time.
