News by : (Parade) -

Ming-Na Wen is celebrating a friendship that has lasted longer than three decades.

The 62-year-old actress recently spent time with Amy Tan, whose bestselling 1989 novel inspired Wen’s breakout film, The Joy Luck Club. During their New York reunion, the pair recreated a photo taken when they first met in 1993.

“When your idol becomes a lifelong friend, it’s an incredible blessing and gift,” Wen wrote alongside sweet then-and-now images she shared to her Instagram on Tuesday, September 8.

The new picture shows Wen and Tan striking a pose similar to the one they shared 33 years earlier. This time, however, Wen had an accomplishment of her own to share with the celebrated novelist: her cookbook.

“Amy Tan was a badass when I first met her in 1993,” Wen recalled.

Released that same year, The Joy Luck Club follows four Chinese American women—June, Waverly, Rose and Lena—and the often complicated relationships they share with their immigrant mothers.

Wen played June alongside Tamlyn Tomita, Rosalind Chao and Lauren Tom. The movie featured a predominantly Asian cast, earned more than $32 million at the box office and became a beloved cultural touchstone.

The relationships forged during filming also endured. Per People, Wen, Tomita, Chao and Tom have remained close over the years, even maintaining an active group chat.

The four actresses reunited for dinner in December 2023 and recreated one of the film’s scenes. Chao later joked to Today that their group chat is so lively she keeps it muted.
