And she had recorded it before she was even old enough to drive.
The song tells the story of a woman left behind after her lover boards the Jamestown Ferry, carrying little more than his decision to leave. She wanders through honky-tonks and bars remembering the man she thought would never actually go.
Tucker quickly proved her early success was no fluke. In 1973, “What’s Your Mama’s Name?” became her first U.S. No. 1 country hit, followed by “Blood Red and Goin’ Down” and “Would You Lay with Me (In a Field of Stone).”
More than 50 years later, Tucker has won two Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2023.
