September 4-6 Smith County Lady Owls Soccer team made the yearly trek to the mountains for the Smoky Mountain Cup, played at Rocky Top Sports World in Gatlinburg. For the fourth year in a row, the fifth overall, the Lady Owls came home Champions. Friday was traveling day and ended with the team meeting at a fun center for go karting and followed by a team meal. Saturday’s first game was against Gatlinburg Pittman. Smith County won 1-0 after a chaotic, hot game. The goal was scored by Senior Chloe Gill and Senior Keeper Catie Belle McCarter kept the clean sheet. The Lady Owls second game was to be played at 8 pm against Oneida HS, TN. The weather had another plan for the night. The game was called for weather giving both teams a draw of 0-0. On Sunday it came down to Smith County vs White House Heritage, the winner would win the Division and take home the Championship. These two teams were familiar with one another having met before in regional play. It was extremely hot and the game was played on artificial turf on a sunken football field, which added to the heat. Both sides knew what was on the line and Smith County played a great game. Senior Aubree Spain took a free kick that was headed by a White House player and went up over the goalie to give Smith County the winning goal in a 1-0 match. Head Coach Nicholus Bussell and assistant Coaches, Lisa Reece and Whit Davis, had led their team to the fourth Championship in a row for the Smoky Mountain Cup. Coming home Champions with an undefeated season so far, the team was excited, but a bit beat up. There would be no game on Tuesday, but Thursday would be the District Opener vs Jackson County. This would be a big game. Jackson County had never beaten Smith County in the history of the programs, but this year Jackson County has built a much stronger team. So many things added to the drama of the night. Both sides saw cards, a yellow card for JC, a yellow Card for SC Coach, and a red card for an SC player and an ejection of a fan. There was a two-hour lightning delay at the half that resumed play at almost 9 pm for the second half. The first half saw the first goal scored on a PK by Matty Walker putting Smith County in the lead. Jackson County would answer it with two more goals before the halftime whistle. Once play resumed after the lightning delay the weather had cooled but there was still heavy rain at times. Smith County made runs for the goal but could not seem to put it in the net. The game would end with the 2-1 Jackson County win. Smith County will continue District Play on Tuesday September 15 at home against Monterey. This was meant to be Senior Night for the Lady Owls but that has been moved to October 1st vs Dekalb County. Come out on Tuesday to cheer the Lady Owls back into the hunt.
