Mexican Independence Day festivities will bring a weekend full of culture, flavor and music to downtown Chicago this weekend.
El Grito Chicago returns to Grant Park’s Butler Field both Saturday and Sunday, encouraging attendees to “dance, eat, and feel that true Mexican spirit right in the heart of Chicago.”

Chicago has a full slate of Mexican Independence festivities planned throughout the weekend, including two popular parades. One of the largest parades in the Midwest, according to Choose Chicago, the 26th Street Mexican Independence Day Parade, will be packed with floats, mariachi musicians and folklórico performances.
Unity is a focus of this year’s parade, with “United We Ride, Stronger Than Ever” as the theme.
The annual Mexican Independence Day Parade on Commercial Avenue in the South Chicago neighborhood is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Sunday. The parade travels south along Commercial Avenue from 87th Street to 100th Street before ending at 101st Street through 103rd Street, officials said.
Also on Sunday afternoon, the Little Village community will host the El Grito Family Run/Walk, which includes both a 5K run and walk and a kids’ dash.
With such events planned, city officials are warning people to expect large crowds, street closures and increased traffic.
Chicago’s Office of Emergency Management encouraged anyone heading to one of the many celebrations to use public transportation and to remain aware of their surroundings while in the large crowds.
While some streets will be closed for specific celebrations, such as El Grito, officials also warned authorities could limit vehicle access downtown.
