Award-Winning 2017 Celeste Ng Novel Ranked a ‘Best Book of the Decade’ by Goodreads ...Saudi Arabia

News by : (Parade) -

American novelist Celeste Ng moved to Shaker Heights, Ohio, when she was only ten. As an adult, she reflected on her upbringing there and was inspired to write a novel that took place in the city. She wanted to explore the ways the town was “unusual” and dive into the communities there.

Additionally, Ng was inspired by interracial adoption and the ways in which that touches class, race, and parenthood. On the issue, Ng said, “Many adoptions today are transracial, which raises really complicated questions about how we handle and talk about race—and racial bias—in America.”

The result of all of this inspiration became her 2017 novel, Little Fires Everywhere.

Little Fires Everywhere was a massive success, both critically and commercially. The novel hit the top spot on the New York Times bestseller list upon release in 2017, and spent more than two years on different hardback and paperback bestseller rankings. It was the Goodreads Choice Award Winner that year for Favorite Fiction. On top of all of this, Hollywood Star Reese Witherspoon chose the book for her coveted Reese’s Book Club.

Little Fires Everywhere has had a lasting impact in its almost ten years post-publication. On Goodreads, the novel was included on their list of the “Biggest Hits of the Last Decade” among the likes of Where the Crawdads Sing and The Nickel Boys.

In addition to selecting the novel for her book club, Witherspoon executive produced and starred in an adaptation of the book for Hulu alongside Kerry Washington. When the mini-series was released in 2020, it was the most watched program on the platform for over two months.

Little Fires Everywhere opens with a literal fire: the Richardson family home in Shaker Heights, Ohio, is burning down, and all suspicion points to Izzy, the family’s youngest daughter. The fire becomes the talk of the town and the main subject of the community’s gossip for the following summer. When Mia Warren, an eccentric artist and single mother, moves in with her teenage daughter, Pearl, the pair shake up more than the Richardson family could have bargained for. Little Fires Everywhere grapples with adoption, secrets, all interwined in a domestic drama.

Little Fires Everywhere and other works by Celeste Ng are available wherever books are sold.
