In the summer of 1972, Tanya Tucker was 13 years old.
She walked into Columbia’s studio in Nashville to record her debut album. She had just had a Top 10 hit.
“Delta Dawn” had been released in May 1972, when she was 13. The song peaked at No. 6 on Billboard’s Hot Country Singles chart and No. 3 on Canada’s RPM Country Singles chart. Columbia tried to downplay her age. It didn’t work.
Producer Billy Sherrill needed a second single that proved she wasn’t a novelty.
He found it on the same sessions. The song was “Love’s the Answer,” written by Emily Mitchell and Norro Wilson, from her debut album Delta Dawn, which was released in September 1972 and peaked at No. 32 on Billboard’s Hot Country LPs chart.
Tucker also recorded “Love’s the Answer” at 13. It was released as a single in October 1972, just after her 14th birthday on October 10, 1958, with “The Jamestown Ferry” on the B-side.
It was bigger than her first hit. At least in Canada.
“Love’s the Answer” reached No. 5 on Billboard’s Hot Country Singles chart and went to No. 1 on RPM’s Country Tracks chart in Canada. “Delta Dawn” had peaked at No. 3 there.
Tucker was born Tanya Denise Tucker in Seminole, Texas, the youngest of three children of Beau and Juanita Tucker. Her early childhood was spent in Willcox, Arizona, where she sang at the Arizona State Fair. Her demo, sent by songwriter Dolores Fuller to Sherrill at CBS, got her signed to Columbia.
She never left. At 14 she had her first U.S. No. 1 with “What’s Your Mama’s Name” in spring 1973, followed by another No. 1 hit with “Blood Red and Goin’ Down.” She moved to MCA for “Lizzie and the Rainman,” made the outlaw turn with TNT in 1978, returned on Capitol in the late 80s with “Strong Enough to Bend,” won Best Country Album and Best Country Song for 2019’s While I’m Livin’, and released Sweet Western Sound with Brandi Carlile in 2023.
She was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame on October 22, 2023. A 60-year career that started when she was 13, recording a No. 1 between middle school classes.
