Nearly 2,000 volunteers filled Chicago’s Union Station Friday for an annual day of service, helping turn day of grief into a day to do good.
The September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance started as a grassroots effort in 2002. It became federal law in 2009.
“We are packing 520,000 meals,” said Polly Hupfeld with Meals of Hope. “The terror attacks on September 11th were such a horrible thing, and now here we are here helping so many people and making something great. Turning that day of tragedy into one of triumph.”
Now in its seventh year, the Chicago meal pack is part of a nationwide effort taking part in some 50 cities.
“The food stays local,” said Jacob Jenkins with IDHS Serve Illinois. “It will be donated to the Greater Chicago Food Depository for distribution to individuals and families in need in Chicago. This is heart work, not hard work. When we can do something good to turn tragedy into triumph is what makes us Americans.”
Kimyada Wellington, an Army veteran, said it “means a lot” to be able to volunteer.
“I’m a veteran and I’m also passionate about giving back. This is where I want to be especially on 9/11 because then it brings so much joy,” she said.
Organizers said they hope this day of unity can extend well beyond just this one day.
