The Twins won’t be getting Byron Buxton back this year. Manager Derek Shelton told reporters, including Bobby Nightengale of the Minnesota Star Tribune, that Buxton will have arthroscopic surgery on his right hip next Friday. More details on his timeline will be available after the surgery but Shelton says it’s possible Buxton could be ready for the start of the 2027 season. He is on the 10-day injured list and can be transferred to the 60-day IL whenever the club needs his roster spot.
The news isn’t a shock. Buxton has been battling hip issues throughout his career and certainly here in 2026. There have been times when he has sat on the bench or served as the designated hitter. He has been on the IL a few times and, as mentioned, is there now. Buxton recently relayed that he would probably require surgery in the offseason but would keep fighting to try to return in 2026.
It’s not quite the offseason yet but perhaps Buxton’s chances of getting healthy have narrowed. Or perhaps the decision was swayed by the club’s diminished chances of making the postseason. They have slipped to 69-77 and 4.5 games back of a playoff spot. They would need to leapfrog four clubs with barely two weeks left in the season.
Whatever the reasoning, the focus will now turn to getting Buxton healthy for next year. Though it looks like the Twins will miss the postseason, the team has been trying to contend lately. Owner Tom Pohlad had suggested he wants to increase spending to win back fan trust and the club did add at the most recent deadline, picking up Jeff Hoffman, Dean Kremer and A.J. Minter.
Buxton will be part of the club’s efforts in 2027 as long as he’s healthy. Fans in Minnesota know that’s no small caveat. At this point, there’s more than a decade of evidence showing that Buxton is supremely talented but rarely on the field for an extended period of time. This is his 12th big league season but he has never played more than 140 games in a campaign and has only twice topped 102 contests. But in just 93 games this year, working around the hip issues, he hit 25 home runs and slashed .254/.319/.511.
Despite the question marks surrounding Buxton’s status, it seems fair to expect some Trevor Larnach trade rumors this offseason. The Twins already agreed to trade him at the deadline for Astros reliever Bryan Abreu, but Houston’s owner nixed that deal. Larnach is making $4.475MM this year and will be due a raise in arbitration. Minnesota can trade him, possibly for pitching, while feeling good about their remaining outfield options.
Walker Jenkins has been playing center field lately with Buxton on the IL. He has a dismal .118/.268/.265 line so far but in just 41 plate appearances and with a tiny .136 batting average on balls in play. He’ll be in the mix for next year’s club just based on his prospect pedigree. Luke Keaschall isn’t an amazing defender on the grass but his bat is good enough for him to be in the lineup somewhere and he’s been pushed out of the infield. Infielders Kody Clemens, Ryan Kreidler and Austin Martin can spend some time on the grass. Gabriel González, Emmanuel Rodriguez, Alan Roden, Matt Wallner and Hendry Mendez are on the 40-man as well, though Wallner might be non-tendered.
Buxton will be in there somewhere as long as he’s not injured. But as always, the question will be how often that’s the case. His contract runs through 2028.
