Swim of the Week is brought to you by arena, a SwimSwam partner.

Disclaimer: Swim of the Week is not meant to be a conclusive selection of the best overall swim of the week, but rather one Featured Swim to be explored in deeper detail. The Swim of the Week is an opportunity to take a closer look at the context of one of the many fast swims this week, perhaps a swim that slipped through the cracks as others grabbed the headlines, or a race we didn’t get to examine as closely in the flood of weekly meets.

Brazilian Olympian Caio Pumputis reached career-best form for the first time in a long time at the Jose Finkel Trophy (SCM) last week in Sao Paulo.

The 27-year-old put up a time of 2:02.60 en route to victory in the men’s 200 breaststroke, narrowly missing out on the decade-old South American and Brazilian National Record of 2:02.58, set by Thiago Simon at the 2016 Jose Finkel Trophy.

In the race in which Simon set the record, a 17-year-old Pumputis placed 4th in a time of 2:08.68.

Simon, 2016 Pumputis, 2026 28.03 27.93 58.93 (30.90) 59.48 (31.55) 1:31.19 (32.28) 1:31.44 (31.96) 2:02.58 (31.39) 2:02.60 (31.16)

Perhaps more significantly than nearing the South American Record for Pumputis, however, was the fact that the swim marked his first PB in the event in eight years, with his previous mark standing at 2:03.27 from the Jose Finkel Trophy in 2018.

He also lowered his 100 breast best time for the first time in five years, clocking 56.80 to improve on his PB of 57.04 from the 2021 Jose Finkel Trophy.

“This competition had a different meaning,” Pumputis wrote in an Instagram post after the Jose Finkel Trophy (translated from Portuguese). “Reached two personal bests one after 8 years and the other after 5. In addition, there were 4 (qualifying times) for the World (Championship) and 3 golds in the individual events.”

A former member of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, Pumputis also won the 50 breast (26.33), placed 2nd in the 100 IM (51.58) and took 3rd in the 200 IM (1:54.97) at the Jose Finkel Trophy, qualifying for the Short Course World Championships in the 100 breast, 200 breast, 200 IM and 400 IM.

This will mark his fifth career appearance at SC Worlds, having also represented Brazil in 2018, 2021, 2022 and 2024. He won bronze in the 100 IM at the 2024 edition in Budapest, while he was also a finalist in the 200 IM (5th) and 100 IM (8th) in 2018, the 200 breast in 2021 (8th), and the 200 breast (DQ) in 2022.
