US Vice President JD Vance has warned Republicans their children’s futures are at risk if they don’t put aside their differences and get out to vote in the midterms.
But his speech overnight at the GOP midterm convention, dubbed “Trumpapalooza”, was most notable for what it did not include.
Vance did not once say the word “Iran”, despite the US’s ongoing (and deeply unpopular) war.
The only time he even uttered the word “war” was in reference to his “dear friend”, assassinated right-wing firebrand Charlie Kirk, saying “Charlie hated war. Whether it was Europe or Africa, the Middle East. He didn’t care. He just hated war.”
Overnight The New York Times reported that Vance, who opposed the war from the outset, has deep concerns about the country’s military strategy, putting him at odds with the president.
The convention was intended to motivate a disgruntled party base with less than two months until the elections. But it has been beset with poor attendance, and controversy over President Donald Trump’s promise on Wednesday night of a dubious, possibly illegal, and stunningly expensive, $5,000 “dividend” to every American adult if the Republicans win the House and Senate.
Vance also did not mention the dividend.
Trump, who is battling historically low approval figures but insists he is the man to save the party from an electoral rout, made another speech on Thursday night, considerably shorter than his 110-minute keynote the night before, after Vance.
He said he was going to be “a little bit brief” because “I don’t feel like going over the same material again”.
“We’re going to have a good time listening to music because I’m getting a little bit tired of politics now,” he said.
He then spoke for another 25 minutes.

The vice-president’s biggest cheer of his 40-minute speech was when he veered from the teleprompter to respond to a protester in the crowd waving the Mexican flag.
“Well, my friend, if you love Mexico so much, get your ass over there, I’ll buy you the plane ticket,” he said. “We just discovered the symbol of the far left: an idiot waving … a Mexican flag at a protest when he should be waving the flag of the United States of America.”

“I can’t help but think about what it is that we’re fighting for and what it is that we want for all of our children,” he said. “I want them to live in a country where you don’t need a PhD in chemistry to understand the ingredient list in the grocery store.
“I want to live in a country where my son’s doctors answer to parents and to the Hippocratic oath, not to a bunch of far left bureaucrats.”
Vance said by the end of the Biden administration Americans had become “tired of being called racist, for noticing that our country was becoming dirtier and poorer and less safe and less prosperous”.
He attacked one of the White House’s current obsessions, Democratic Senate candidate from Texas James Talarico, because “he will not shut up about how there are 6 genders… I never want to see that guy’s web browser history”.
Vance has just written a new book, Communion, about his journey back to Catholicism – and recent interviews have heavily featured his faith. In a podcast he said a vice-president’s job was to do “as much of God’s work as possible” and “if that leads to the end times, ok”. He said he would not be shocked “if the Antichrist was walking among us”.
Last night’s speech featured more than a dash of religion – he claimed that America “was an answer to prayer 250 years ago”, and though “we live in the city of man, not the city of God, I believe that our founders built this nation on a promise that echoes our Creator”.
He also speculated that Democrat policies sprang from a “very deep emptiness in the soul”.
“They’re not just a party of little higher taxes, maybe some dumb regulations,” he said. “They’re not the party of FDR or JFK. Hell, they’re not even the party of Bill Clinton anymore.
“The Democrats are the party of hatred. They’re the party that despises America and the people who built it.”
The closest Vance came to mentioning the war with Iran was a pointed plea with Republicans not to “give the country over to a bunch of crazy people because you happen to disagree with us on a policy issue here or there”.

Trump spent some time complaining about media reports of empty seats at the arena and insisted “the Democrats are getting nervous. They said if we did a midterm convention, nobody would show up. This place is packed.”

The slightly hoarse-sounding president then reprised some of the main points of his speech the night before, speaking for more than 20 minutes.
This included reiterating his promise to provide a “‘Trump dividend’, $5000 for every adult citizen in our country”.
He finished by leading the crowd in a call-and-response pledge: “To the greatest president in the history of the United States, that loves us so much he can’t even breathe, that I will go out with my family, my friends… [and] vote on November 3rd”.

“This was no longer about left and right. It was about the sane and insane. It was about common sense and commun-ism.”
