A new documentary showcases the unbelievable bravery and heroic life of an La Grange F-15 pilot who was given orders to take down one of the hijacked planes before it crashed 25 years ago on 9/11.
John Scaletta, filmmaker and high school friend of Lieutenant Colonel Daniel “Nasty” Nash, created the documentary “NASTY” to tell not only tell the story of when the local hero was ordered to intercept what was believed to be a hijacked commercial airliner, but also to showcase his struggles after the tragic day.
Nash “battled PTSD” after 9/11, Scaletta said, and “it was something that he couldn’t shake.”
“At the heart of this film, it’s about the sacrifice that Dan made and the price that some people have to pay long after their military service has ended and there’s help out there — there’s people that love them,” Scaletta said. “I think his brother said it best, which was, even heroes need to be saved. And they do that by accepting the help that people provide and offer.”
Nash, La Grange native and University of Illinois grad, died in June 2021 from liver failure and other compilations.
Even in his teenage years in the western suburb of Chicago, Nash always wanted to be an F-15 fighter pilot, Scaletta said. They were both graduates of the Lyons Township High School class of 1984 in their hometown that has become the setting for Nash’s legacy: a float in his honor in the annual pet parade — his favorite local event.
The film is about “sacrifice, but it’s also about friendships,” Scaletta said. “That was something that I think Dan would smile upon, that all the people, all the friends and classmates that came together to honor him, to build that float and make the film.”
Scaletta said more than 50 people participated in the creation of the documentary.
“He was one of us,” Scaletta said. “If Dan was still alive today, he’d be teaching flight school. He did that in Japan.”
Through the lens of friends and loved ones, the 42-minute film chronicles Nash’s military career, his pivotal role in the moments after the 9/11 attacks, and the lasting effects the experience had on the rest of his life.
While the country and the whole world went into a spiral immediately afterward, Nash went into a turbulent time of his own with addiction.
Scaletta said he hopes the film, that premiered in La Grange where Nash watched movies as a kid, both helps people with PTSD feel less alone and raises awareness for how others can help.
The movie opens on Friday at Antioch Theater and at the Ottawa Center for the Arts. It will also play at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Brookfield Library and on Sunday at the Oak Park Film Festival. It’s nominated for Best Documentary at the fest.
