Two men from California who were allegedly transporting 220 pounds of cannabis in a rental minivan were arrested after a traffic stop in northwest Indiana on Thursday, authorities said.
A 34-year-old man and a 27-year-old man, who were not named by police, were arrested after an officer stopped their rental van on the Indiana Toll Road in Porter County for traffic violations, Lake County Sheriff’s Department said.
The officer noticed several large boxes inside the van during the stop, police said, and that both occupants, who said they were traveling from California to New York, appeared “unusually nervous.”
A Lake County K-9 indicated the presence of narcotics to the officer, and 220 pounds of cannabis packed into the boxes in the van was uncovered and confiscated by authorities.
The men in the vehicle, residents of San Leandro, California, were detained and later released pending charges for drug possession and dealing out of Porter County.
The investigation remains ongoing and no additional information was immediately available.
