A 15-year-old boy is facing several charges including first degree murder five months after he allegedly shot two Hyde Park Academy students while they waited as a bus stop near the school, police announced on Thursday.
The 15-year-old, who was not named by police, was arrested on Tuesday and charged with first degree murder, attempted first degree murder, aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon, aggravated battery, aggravated discharge of a firearm and intimidation to commit a criminal offense, authorities said.
The deadly shooting took place around 3:20 p.m. on April 15 while 16-year-old Eric Billups and a 16-year-old girl — who was also not named — were standing outside at a bus stop on the 6300 block of South Stony Island Avenue in Woodlawn shortly after they were dismissed from class at Hyde Park Academy for the day.
Witnesses told police a person wearing a school uniform pulled out a gun and shot both of the teens, authorities said. Billups was shot several times and later pronounced dead at a local hospital. The girl was shot in the leg and later recovered.
The 15-year-old and Billups allegedly got into a fight at school earlier that day and were supposed to fight again, police said. However, the shooter was released from school early and later returned with a gun, police said.
Seventeen bullet casings were recovered by police at the scene after the shooting.
