BYRON, N.Y. — Cleanup efforts continue after a chip seal treatment failed on State Route 262 between Byron and Bergen, causing tar and loose gravel to stick to multiple vehicles.

Genesee County officials said the chip seal treatment did not adhere to the road surface properly. That caused multiple vehicles to get stuck with tar and loose gravel sticking to their tires.
News10NBC’s Garrett Chan found one of those vehicles, a tractor-trailer, in the parking lot of the Dollar General along State Route 262. Workers had been there since 10 a.m. working to remove the buildup on the tires.
Leonardo Serrano said he was driving to Elba. Apart from “loose gravel” signs, he did not see issues with the road.
“I start driving going down the road…start doing like a jackknife,” Serrano said. “I got off and look back and see more cars in a similar situation.”
Nicholas Callanan, the owner of Callanan Towing, said they had to tow away multiple cars in a similar sticky situation.
“When we got there, the first vehicle that we showed up on had massive amounts of tar and stone all over its wheels. So as the other five vehicles that were on location…customers of ours said basically all the same thing. Something didn’t feel right. It wasn’t their normal drive through loose stone,” Callanan said.
News10NBC drove along State Route 262 going west. The road was open to traffic in both directions with signs of loose gravel on either side of the road.
“I heard it was some problem with the mix, but I’m not sure,” Serrano said.
“That tar was of a very sticky substance. Very play doh like…we’re going to have to find some kind of chemical or something to remove that off our equipment as well,” Callanan said.
Serrano said Midland Asphalt reached out to him on covering the costs of the tires and cleanup. News10NBC reached out to the Genesee County Public Works Department on how they plan on moving forward with the paving project and if they had any prior warning to drivers.
