Alabama soccer’s undefeated start came to an end Sunday in a high-scoring battle against Harvard.
The Crimson Tide fell 6-4 to the Crimson after taking an early 2-0 lead. Forward Ashley Roni opened the scoring in the 19th minute before defender Kennedy Garcia scored five minutes later.
Harvard quickly responded, scoring just 19 seconds after Garcia’s goal.
The momentum shifted in the 36th minute when Alabama forward Reece Ward received a red card following a video review. The Crimson Tide played the remainder of the match with 10 players,
“I was actually very pleased with the start,” Alabama head Coach Wes Hart said. “We came out flying and that was kind of what we challenged our group to do.”
Forward Larkin Thomason scored on a penalty kick in the 52nd minute to put Alabama back ahead, but Harvard responded less than two minutes later.
Harvard took a 5-3 lead before the midfielder Melina Rebimbas scored in the 84th minute to bring Alabama within one. Harvard added another goal three minutes later to secure the win.
Hart said Alabama’s mistakes ultimately proved costly.
“We had the two-goal lead and then we just had some bad decision making,” Hart said. “We were a little overaggressive in the box, we had some silly challenges and that red card was kind of a backbreaker.”
The loss moves Alabama to 7-1 on the season. Alabama will face the Auburn Tigers on the Plains on Friday. The match is set to kick off at 6:30 p.m. CT.
