A British man made plans to sabotage a drone factory in Wiltshire on the instructions of a Russian intelligence operative, a court has heard.
Joshua Cammidge, 31, is accused of conducting research on potential targets in his hometown of Swindon and offering the details to a representative of the GRU Volunteer Corps – a group banned by the British government for being controlled by Russia’s military intelligence service.
Prosecutors allege that Cammidge received instructions from Aiden Minnis, a British man who is fighting on behalf of the Russian military against Ukraine, and is believed to be linked to the GRU Volunteer Corps.
Prosecutor Warren Stanier told Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Thursday that Cammidge had been in contact with Minnis on Facebook before moving to the Telegram app and messaging frequently between 28 August and 3 September.
“The essence of communications was locations within the UK of factories that manufactured drones and the sabotage of those factories,” Mr Stanier said.
“The prosecution case is he knew exactly who he was communicating with and the implications of what he was offering to do.”

He has been charged with violating the National Security Act by engaging in conduct to materially assist a foreign intelligence service and preparing for an act of sabotage.
Cammidge was not asked to enter a plea during a hearing at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, and was remanded in custody ahead of a hearing at the Old Bailey on 25 September.
The GRU Volunteer Corps was banned in July, alongside two-Iran linked groups, under new powers targeting hostile states and their proxies. The law makes it a crime to support, assist or receive payment from the organisation.
The group’s official listing says it is “directed and controlled by” Russia’s GRU military intelligence service, and “supports Russian military and intelligence objectives by providing a structure through which the GRU can recruit, organise and deploy volunteer and proxy forces”.
