ROCHESTER, N.Y. — This week, students across the area are stepping onto the bus and heading to their first day of school. News10NBC’s Emily Putnam spoke with the general manager of a local bus company about one specific feature on a school bus that prompted a viewer to ask a good question.
A viewer named David asked: “I am wondering why some school bus drivers in the City park with their yellow lights on? It’s frustrating because we don’t know …should I pass or sit behind it?”“You never know what’s going to happen in or around the school bus,” said Chris Cortash, the general manager of Monroe School Transportation.Emily Putnam: “What should people do when they see those yellow flashing lights on the top of a school bus?”Chris Cortash: “What they should really do is immediately proceed with caution and be prepared to stop immediately… You don’t know if the school bus is actually going to stop or if it’s going to continue… but you just want to be prepared in case that school bus does stop.”Putnam also asked Cortash if he could drive one school bus safety tip home for people, what would it be.“Just because you can see the bus driver doesn’t necessarily always mean the bus driver’s going to see you,” Cortash said. “So just be prepared and alert to stop at any time make sure you give the bus plenty of space… cause you don’t know when it’s going to come to a stop and when you can see a student running back and forth across the street.”Monroe School Transportation is owned by Summit School Services, which operates around the country. Summit’s website (link to: summitllc.com/companies/monroe/ ) says Monroe School Transportation has one of the biggest school bus fleets in Monroe County. Cortash said they can service any district and they’re seeking new districts.At the end of last school year, News10NBC reported that Monroe School Transportation laid off half its drivers. The company served the Rochester City School District for nine years until last spring. Now RCSD contracts with other companies like First Student and RTS.
