At 10 AM CT tomorrow, there will be Chicago Blackhawks on the ice at the Blackhawks Ice Center!
The Blackhawks’ prospects will practice Friday, Saturday and Sunday before hosting the Blues’ prospects in two games, one on Monday evening (6 PM puck drop) and the second on Tuesday afternoon (4 PM).
These games always give you a few fun moments and potential highlights, but this won’t have nearly as much hype as when Connor Bedard made his first appearance in a Blackhawks sweater in the Tom Kurvers Showcase in 2023. Still, there are some intriguing players hitting the ice for the Blackhawks.
Here are the guys I’m interested to watch, both in practices and the game action.
Blackhawks forward Sacha BoisvertBigger Boisvert
We’ve talked about it a few times this summer: Sacha Boisvert got big this summer. At the Blackhawks’ development camp he told us he was close to 200 pounds and looked like he hadn’t missed a gym day. He had a disappointing year at Boston University last season but still signed his entry-level contract and appeared in seven NHL games down the stretch. Importantly, he scored his first NHL goal (and it was a game-winner).
As an aside, I wouldn’t be shocked if Boisvert and Maddox Dagenais dropped the gloves at some point… (write that down)
Following Felcman
Jiří Felcman was a third-round pick in 2023 who then spent the next three seasons (mostly) with Langnau in the National League in Switzerland. His offensive numbers don’t blow you away. But he’s a big (6-4, 200), physical center who really impressed the Blackhawks’ coaching staff after he came over to start his North American pro career with Rockford late last year.
I’m interested to see how he plays with and against some pretty good prospects, some of whom have NHL experience.
Vanacker’s Approach
Marek Vanacker was a first-round pick in 2024 but his first post-draft season got off to a late start because of offseason surgery. He had a solid second half and finished that season with 24 goals in 45 games for Brantford — but he was overshadowed by fellow Blackhawks prospect Nick Lardis having a historic scoring season.
Last year, Vanacker reported to camp healthy and went on to lead the OHL with 47 goals in 60 games. I’m interested to watch him play against other pro players; he, like Spellacy, will be a full-time pro beginning this season.
Blackhawks forward AJ SpellacyMore Size Everywhere
Even though there are still people on social media obsessing about the Blackhawks’ lack of size in their forward group, the roster for the showcase games is a reminder that there’s size coming — and a lot of it. There are five forwards listed as 6-3 or taller (not including Boisvert). There are six forwards listed as being at least 200 pounds (again, not including Boisvert).
This will be the third prospect showcase for AJ Spellacy, who is fully going pro this year and begins his effort to make the NHL roster with these practices and games. He’s been impressive in his previous two showcases, so we’ll see how a more physically mature player looks against some other potential NHL players.
I’ll also be very interested to see how 2026 second-round pick Ryan Roobroeck looks against some older, more mature players. He’s off to a nice start in the OHL preseason and has really good size (6-4, 215) for a young prospect.
On the blue line, the organization was thrilled with what they saw from Taige Harding in his first pro season with Rockford last year. Again: he’s enormous (6-7, 237) but there’s a lot to like about his game. Even though the Blackhawks’ defense depth chart appears to be full at the NHL level right now, I’m going to have an eye on him.
