WYOMING COUNTY, N.Y. — The Wyoming County Sheriff’s Office has started an animal abuser registry inspired by a dog who survived severe abuse.

The registry is called “Ziggy’s Law,” named after a dog who survived what the sheriff’s office described as torturous abuse from his owner in 2024. The owner was convicted of aggravated cruelty to animals.

The office will now post the information of animal abusers on a public registry for 15 years on the first offense and for life on a second offense. That list will be visible on the sheriff’s website once completed.

Monroe County lawmakers discussed the creation of a similar registry at Tuesday night’s county legislature meeting. That discussion was tabled until the next meeting, set for Oct. 13.
