The University of Alabama SGA announced it would partner with the Mercedes-Benz Amphitheater to offer student section concert tickets at a discounted price of $30. This would allow more students to experience the events that Tuscaloosa has to offer while surrounded by their classmates.
Sublime will perform at the Mercedes-Benz Amphitheater on Sept. 18, with most general admission tickets ranging from $60-$100, and Ty Myers will perform Sept. 10.
“I think this is a very important opportunity for students because college can be financially challenging for students but should not stop us from having fun,” said Drue Warner, a sophomore majoring in public relations.
SGA and the Mercedes-Benz Amphitheater are working together to provide more opportunities and better experiences for students at a lower price for select concerts throughout the year.
“Tickets are so overpriced,” said Savanna Lendardson, a junior majoring in advertising. “It’s so hard to convince friends to go because everything is so expensive.”
Over 300 discounted student section tickets were sold for the Ty Myers concert on Thursday. The goal is “to continue offering student benefits for future concerts when opportunities are available,” said SGA vice president for external affairs Lily Leitner.
The amphitheater leadership team shared an interest in getting student feedback, so they created a committee with SGA. The members will have three meetings to discuss topics such as performing artists, marketing and the overall experiences of concerts for students.
Leitner said the partnership started last semester and has turned into something that provides UA students with real benefits while also strengthening student engagement with the amphitheater.
“Our hope is absolutely to continue offering student benefits for future concerts when opportunities are available,” Leitner said.
