Health officials in Kane County say a second individual has been diagnosed with the measles in connection to a case previously reported last month.
According to officials, the vaccinated individual is a contact of the first case, which was reported to health officials in late August.
“While the MMR vaccine provides strong protection against measles, breakthrough infections can occur. People who are vaccinated and develop measles are generally less likely to experience severe illness or complications and may be less likely to transmit the virus,” officials said in a statement.
According to the release, unvaccinated individuals who were exposed after the initial case were already under quarantine, and the new case doesn’t change that timeline.
Vaccinated individuals who were exposed to measles are encouraged to monitor themselves for symptoms for up to 21 days after exposure. Unvaccinated individuals are expected to quarantine for up to 21 days after their last known exposure, and those individuals have been contacted by health officials.
The Kane County Health Department is reaching out to contacts of the second individual who was diagnosed with the virus.
Kane County officials are also warning the public of an ongoing outbreak in southwestern Wisconsin, with more than 100 cases reported in three counties in the state.
As a result of the current outbreaks, officials are urging residents to receive the MMR vaccine, pointing to the nearly 1,600 potential exposures that were registered in connection to the initial case.
“Vaccination remains our strongest tool for preventing measles and limiting its spread. It also demonstrates why everyone who may have been exposed regardless of vaccination status should take potential exposure seriously, monitor for symptoms, and follow guidance from public health officials,” the department said.

-Cough
-Runny nose
-Red, watery eyes
-A rash, which typically appears 3-to-5 days after initial symptoms, that starts on the face and spreads to the rest of the body
