At least for one week – and probably two – our state can enjoy a perch near the top of the college football world.
All three local FBS teams came away with opening week wins, but which one of them had the best weekend?
You can make a case for any of our three programs, and each for a different reason.
The good stuff began last Thursday night in Atlanta, where the CU Buffs overcame first-game sloppiness (from both teams), some unfamiliar weather conditions (thick humidity made handling the ball a challenge for everyone) and a less-than-stellar opener from their highly touted quarterback to defeat Georgia Tech. Mistakes were plentiful (not unusual for an opener), but the way CU won the game – by winning the line of scrimmage for the first time in forever – is a massive positive for Deion Sanders’ program.
These Buffs looked nothing like the old Buffs. Instead of the ‘toss it all over the field’ passing attack that Deion’s teams have come to be known for, this CU team did what they said new offensive coordinator Brennan Marion was going to do, and ran the ball right down the throats of the unprepared Yellow Jackets. Quarterback Julian ‘Ju Ju’ Lewis may not have looked the part of a former five-star recruit, but the running back trio of Micah Welch, Damian Henderson II and JaQuail Smith more than made up for it.
If a physical brand of football is what this season is going to feature, a bowl game is most certainly within reach. With FCS Weber State coming to Boulder on Saturday, a 2-0 start is pretty likely. What a boost that could be after a three-win season a year ago.
In Fort Collins, the brand-new Colorado State Rams came out of the gate firing, and put a beatdown on their Border War rivals from Wyoming. The takeaway could be… the takeaways, with the CSU defense picking off three passes. New quarterback Hauss Hejny was even better than expected, throwing five TD’s. For an opener, the offense was crisp and clean – only a handful of penalties marred the impressive performance.
Jim Mora Jr’s first game as the Rams’ head coach was a rivalry game win, recapturing the Bronze Boot – and those have been in short supply in the Fort in recent seasons. Assuming they don’t suffer an emotional hangover, CSU should also get to 2-0 when they host FCS Southern Utah on Saturday. That would match last season’s win total.
Just by coincidence, Southern Utah outgunned Weber State 47-42 on Saturday.
And while the Air Force Falcons whipped a badly overmatched Duquesne team on Saturday, the big positive was the rebirth of the Falcons’ vaunted rushing attack. While throwing the ball just nine times, they rolled up more than 400 yards on the ground – with 17 different players carrying the football. If this is a sign that the old AFA is back, a Mountain West title isn’t out of reach.
The Falcons have their first conference game on Saturday when they host new conference member North Dakota State, the former FCS powerhouse making the jump to FBS. If you’re seeking to attend the best game available within driving range this weekend, head to Colorado Springs.
Add in the fact that none of the three teams committed a turnover in their openers (well, the Buffs did, but a fortuitous early whistle saved their bacon) as another big positive moving forward. Could the local college football season turn out to be better than we’ve been expecting?
