A mother accused of killing her 2-year-old son before trying to harm herself in her Frankfort home is set to appear in court for the first time Tuesday, and she’ll be represented by an attorney who helped defend Casey Anthony.

Forty-year-old Corie Walsh faces three counts of first-degree murder after her 2-year-old son, Barrett Walsh, was found hanged in the basement of her suburban Chicago home before Walsh was located with cuts in a bloody tub, according to court documents.

The Will County Sheriff’s office confirmed Walsh is scheduled to make her first court appearance Tuesday morning.

Andrea Lyon, who helped defend Anthony in a 2011 murder case that stunned the nation, will represent Walsh, she confirmed to NBC Chicago. Anthony was found not guilty of killing her 2-year-old daughter in a highly publicized trial and famously acquitted of charges of murder, manslaughter and child abuse.

Lyon identifies herself as “the Angel of Death Row,” citing her record defending death penalty cases, though Illinois does not currently have a death penalty.

According to court documents, Walsh told police her son was the “devil” and the “anti-Christ.” Lyon argues Walsh was suffering from a “psychotic episode.”

In a petition seeking to keep Walsh from being released pretrial, prosecutors said “a neighbor was performing CPR on a toddler, later identified as two-year-old Barrett Walsh, born March 26, 2024,” when police arrived at the Frankfort home in response to a report of “an injured 2-year-old child.”

The neighbor told authorities she found Barrett, also known as “Bear,” hanging from a rafter in the basement. He had a ligature around his neck, and his feet were off the ground, prosecutors said.

Officers at the scene were “directed to an upstairs bathroom located in the master bedroom,” the documents state, “reportedly due to this defendant, the mother of the victim, attempting to harm herself.”

When they entered the bathroom, they found Walsh lying in a tub, “fully dressed, surrounded by bloody water,” prosecutors said.

The neighbor told police she had taken a knife from Walsh and tried to help her by holding a towel on her left inner thigh. Walsh had cuts on her wrists and thighs.

The child was pronounced dead later that day and autopsy results found he died of “asphyxia due to ligature compression of the neck,” the documents show, though police said a final cause and manner of death were still pending.

Walsh was transported from the scene to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, where she later admitted to police how she killed her son, officials said. Police said her admission aligned with what was discovered inside the home.

Prosecutors also reported an infant was inside the home at the time and two school-aged children had returned home around the time the child was discovered, though all three were physically unharmed.

Walsh’s husband, who lives at the home, was out of state at the time of the incident.

Citing witnesses, prosecutors said Walsh had “recently become very invested in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial,” which involved a Massachusetts mother who was accused of killing her three children before trying to kill herself.

The trial generated intense interest for more than a month, deeply dividing the public and drawing attention to issues around maternal mental health after childbirth before a judge declared a mistrial on Friday.

Clancy’s attorney said she was suffering from a postpartum psychosis, while prosecutors argue that she had severe mental illness but was able to understand and control her actions.

According to the court documents, Walsh “had been actively discussing the case via group text message with her friends” up until just hours before the tragic discovery was made inside her home.

Police said a forensic analysis of Walsh’s phone was being conducted and an investigation into the tragic incident remains ongoing.
