Back to school shopping: Walmart, Target and Staples prices compared in Rochester ahead of first day of school ...Middle East

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Tomorrow is the first day of school in the Rochester City School District and plenty of other districts, and News10NBC’s Tom Kowalski set out to find the best last minute back-to-school deals.

Kowalski looked at this story about school supplies prices from 2023, which found a four-pack of highlighters for $2.47, pocket folders for .15¢, a box of 24 crayons for .25¢ and a backpack for just $6 — all at Walmart. Kowalski visited the local Walmart to check the prices of these items today.

Crayons stayed the same at 25¢. The folder went up .10¢ to .25¢.

The four-pack of highlighters actually decreased in price by .60¢ to $1.87. However, Kowalski could not find a backpack in the store for less than $20.

In addition to these items, Kowalski also looked at the cost of a 24-pack of No. 2 pencils — .92¢ — and a composition notebook — .38¢.

Kowalski then stopped by Target. He found most prices to be slightly above Walmart’s.

Crayons remained .25¢ across both stores, but Target’s highlighters cost $1.91 — just four cents more than Walmart. Target’s folders cost slightly more, 50¢ compared to Walmart’s .25¢, and Target’s pencils also cost a dollar more — $1.99 compared to .92¢ at Walmart.

The biggest difference was the backpacks. Target’s cheapest cost $30 — $10 more than Walmart’s.

Finally, Kowalski stopped by Staples, where he found prices much higher than Walmart’s. While folders saw no price difference and crayons cost just .25¢ more, both a pack of pencils and highlighters cost more than double — or even triple — their Walmart equivalent. Pencils cost $3.49, while highlighters cost $1.99.

Backpacks also saw a massive price difference — once again, $30 compared to $20 at Walmart.

According to the National Retail Federation, spending for K through 12 students has reached more than an average of $860 per student this year, but that’s actually down $30 from 2023.

However, at these prices, saving even just a few bucks on school supplies can make a massive difference for some family budgets.
