Frizzell’s brother David later recalled the recording session in an essay preserved by the Library of Congress.
“Lefty didn’t just sing ‘The Long Black Veil’ that day, Lefty performed ‘The Long Black Veil’ that day,” he wrote.
The recording became a country hit, but the song soon traveled far beyond its original release. Johnny Cash included “Long Black Veil” on his 1965 album Orange Blossom Special, then gave it an especially memorable performance before inmates on 1968’s At Folsom Prison. Cash’s low voice and spare delivery suited a narrator carrying his secret to the gallows.
The song also found a home in folk, rock and bluegrass. The Band recorded it for Music from Big Pink, while Joan Baez, Burl Ives and many others made it part of their own catalogs. Rolling Stone later included it among the 40 saddest country songs of all time.
In 2018, Frizzell’s original recording entered the National Recording Registry. Nearly seven decades after it was cut, “Long Black Veil” still sounds like a tale handed down for generations, which is exactly what Dill hoped to write.
