Brad Pitt reunites with director David Ayer in the upcoming survival movie “Heart of the Beast,” following their previous collaboration on “Fury.”
The film is slated for release on September 25.
Pitt portrays James Belmont, a former Special Forces officer on a camping trip in the Alaskan wilderness with his retired fighting dog, Odin.
Their trip turns into a fight for survival after their single-engine plane crashes into the icy waters.
David Ayer presents a departure from his previous work, which spans war, thriller, crime, action, and drama films.
He emphasizes that “Heart of the Beast” presented a unique challenge due to the nature of the story and the harsh filming conditions faced by the cast and crew.
“I had no idea what it was going to be like when I started on the project,” Ayer told Entertainment Weekly.
“It’s a story about a man and a dog, forests, a mountain, and an airplane; how hard is that? Oh my God! That was our recurring joke on set; Brad and I would look at each other at the end of the day and say, ‘We’ve got a dog, how hard is that?’”
He added: “It was an enormous challenge, physically demanding, with the wetness, fatigue, and cold, along with a great deal of emotional strain. Brad poured all his feelings and emotions into the performance, and I was directing the camera, sharing the moment with him. It was grueling work, but you feel that effort in every shot of the film.”
Struggle with the past
The film explores the psychological trauma of Pitt’s character, James Belmont, following painful memories from his military service through flashbacks.
Brad Pitt said of the character: “I see James as a soul haunted by painful memories of the past, but he strives to calm his mind and open his heart. Nature is a balm for his soul, and Odin is the greatest love and friend he has left on Earth.”
Co-starring a dog
Ober, who plays the dog Odin in the film, marks his acting debut, accompanying Pitt throughout most of the movie.
David Ayer revealed the behind-the-scenes details of working with the dog during filming, saying, “We put Odin first on the casting list. Brad really considered himself Odin’s co-actor, even though he was also training him.”
He added, “He had to handle and control the dog while maintaining his own character, presence, and performance, even when the dog was busy trying to bite a bee flying by. So, his ability to manage all of that was amazing.”
Pitt spoke about the difficulty of sharing the screen with a dog for about 95 percent of the film, explaining, “Because dogs don’t memorize lines, of course; they just act naturally as dogs. I became very attached to that hero dog, and I always had to carry treats for the dogs with me.”
He continued, “In the middle of a scene, let’s say an emotional one, the dog might start to wander off, and then I’d have to stop filming and say, ‘Ober, come here, mate, take this,’ and then immediately get back into the emotional mood of the scene. I became very good at that.”
