World Junior Champion and budding national Argentine sports treasure Agostina Hein will not compete in what would’ve been her first international championships on home soil: the 2026 South American Games

Hein, 18, and her coach, Sebastian Montero, shared the news of her absence on Instagram this evening, citing an ongoing recovery from apendicitis surgery:

It is with much sadness that we want to tell you that we’re withdrawing from the South American Games taking place in Rosario. As you’ll all know, I underwent emergency appendicitis surgery, which meant our participation was at risk, but we tried to regain strength and let mis doctors guide my decision. After reflecting on the recovery times that must be followed to prevent further complications later (like a hernia that would leave me out of the water for more than a month) together with my family and team of professionals, we decided to withdraw from the Games to ensure a strong recovery and a progressive return to training.

As a team, we are very sad to not be part of the delegation and not fulfill our commitment as part of the Argentine Olympic Committee and CADDA, for the trust they put in us to complete this objective

Thanks a lot to everyone for understanding and continuing to support us this year. All that’s left is to wish the great Argentine delegation success, you’re going to shine.

Hein’s absence will sting not just for the Argentine swim team but for the entire national athletic delegation. Even before her sizeable 2026 improvements, Argentine’s National Olympic Committee named her female Athlete of the Year for 2025 after winning seven golds at the Junior Pan American Games. Argentine congress also recently honored Hein with the Malvinas (Falkland Islands) Award for her national contributions to sport.

The junior star seemed poise to continue on a rampage of success. Hein has rewritten Argentina’s record book across the last two years. Recent highlights include a 4:32.54 400 IM Pan Pac bronze and South American record and a 4:02.99 400 free.

For Argentina’s swim team, the news comes as a gut punch after already missing top male swimmer Ulises Saravia for the home games. The show will go on, though, with swimming competition running September 13th-16th in Rosario.
