The Arts Council of Tuscaloosa will display an exhibit for the Holle Center for Communication Arts entitled, “You Mean the World to Me: The Real Stories in Our Family Photos” in The Arts Council Gallery at the Dinah Washington Cultural Arts Center.
The exhibit will premier Sept. 4 at 5 p.m, during First Friday for the local monthly art walk in downtown Tuscaloosa. It will remain on display until Oct. 26.
Developed by Zun Lee, a visiting scholar and inaugural Holle Center Artist Laureate, “You Mean the World to Me: The Real Stories in Our Family Photos,” highlights themes of memory, belonging and family, made from photographs contributed from Tuscaloosa community members and other contributors across the South.
“This gallery is unique because it presents a different artist, style and medium every two months for everyone to experience,” said Kevin Ledgewood, Dinah Washington Cultural Arts Center gallery coordinator. “These artists might be local or regional, professional or accomplished amateur.”
The gallery will also include “The Ensley Childhood Project,” a multimedia section made by Timothie Quarshey, a Birmingham-native creative producer, that highlights Ensley, a historic Birmingham neighborhood.
An additional “Framed in the South: Polaroids and Personal Histories at America’s 250th” digital initiative from the Holle Center will be displayed.
“The Arts Council is happy to welcome the Holle Center back to the DWCAC for another collaborative project,” Ledgewood said. “The gallery and other cultural experiences around town give everyone the chance to improve their quality of life through the arts.”
