The franchise launched in July 1992 with Welcome to Dead House, the first of 62 original books that would go on to define a whole generation’s idea of “scary.” Stine’s formula was simple but addictive: ordinary kids running into monsters, curses, and haunted objects in perfectly mundane settings, all wrapped up with a twist ending and a wink of humor so it never got too intense for its 7-to-12-year-old audience. Instantly recognizable, too, thanks to Tim Jacobus’s cover art and that raised, bumpy “Goosebumps” logo font that made the books impossible to miss on a shelf.
It worked. Goosebumps has sold more than 400 million copies worldwide, translated into 35 languages, making it the second best-selling children’s book series ever, trailing only Harry Potter. At the height of its popularity in the ’90s, the series was reportedly moving over four million copies a month.
The books didn’t stay confined to the page for long, either. A TV anthology series launched in 1995 and became the number one kids’ show in America for three straight years. There’s also a video game series, a comic line, and two feature films, including the 2015 movie starring Jack Black as a fictionalized version of Stine himself. More recently, a new Goosebumps series landed on Disney+ in 2023, introducing the franchise to yet another generation of kids.
Some characters from the series have taken on a life of their own beyond the books entirely. Slappy the Dummy, the haunted ventriloquist’s dummy who debuted in Night of the Living Dummy.
Stine, who’s been nicknamed the “Stephen King of children’s literature,” didn’t stop at Goosebumps. He also created the Fear Street series for teen readers, which has sold more than 80 million copies of its own and spawned a film trilogy on Netflix.
