102nd JAPANESE INTERCOLLEGIATE SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Thursday, September 3rd – Sunday, September 6th Osaka, Towa Pharmaceutical Lactab Dome LCM (50m) Results

The second national record in as many days went down at the 102nd Japanese Intercollegiate Swimming Championships, with World Championships medalist Tatsuya Murasa making his presence known.

After Olympic silver medalist Tomoyuki Matsushita ripped a monster mark of 4:05.83 in last night’s 400m IM final, 19-year-old Murasa busted out a new Japanese standard in the 100m freestyle.

Racing in the final of the men’s 4x100m free relay tonight in Osaka, Murasa led off with an opening split of 47.83 for the best time of his career.

The ace opened in 22.91 and closed in 24.92 to shave .02 off the national record of 47.85 that Katsuhiro Matsumoto put on the books at the 2023 Japanese Swimming Championships.

Entering this competition, Murasa’s lifetime best in the 100m free rested at the 48.43 he notched at the National Sports Festival last September. That means the man hacked well over half a second off that former PB to become just the third Japanese man ever to clear the 48-second barrier in the event.

The Chuo University squad, which included Murasa (47.83), Kouei Emori (49.41), Shoon Mitsunaga (47.33) and Syunsuke Matsumoto (50.26), combined to collectively stop the clock at 3:14.83 to register a new meet record.

Murasa now owns two individual Japanese national swimming records. He already possessed the 200m free benchmark, courtesy of the 1:44.54, which gave him the bronze medal at the 2025 World Championships.

Murasa’s 47.83 now renders him the 4th-fastest Asian man in history.
