Among the most intimate revelations in the book is the story of Freddie’s close friendship with Elton John. The two legends first connected through a shared manager, John Reid, who guided both Queen and Elton’s careers. But what began as a professional overlap grew into something far more personal. Freddie and Elton shared a deep love of art, beauty, and the joy of giving, exchanging thoughtful, carefully chosen gifts over many years: artworks, an onyx and gold bracelet, a Cartier ring, and Lalique vases. Expressions of genuine affection between two people who truly understood each other.

Elton remained devoted to Freddie until the very end, visiting him during his final months and arriving, as always, with gifts in hand. When those pieces were eventually sold at the landmark 2023 Sotheby’s auction, Austin donated the proceeds to the Elton John AIDS Foundation, a beautiful way of honoring the bond between them.
A Life in Lyrics offers something even more intimate – a glimpse into the man behind the legend. A lover of Chopin, a meticulous keeper of notebooks, a person who got up in the night to scribble lyrics and poured the same creativity into everything he touched, from his music to his home.
